Domaine Chevrot

Domaine Chevrot is based in one of Burgundy’s “forgotten” appellations - Cheilly-les-Maranges - at the far southern tip of the Côte de Beaune below Chassagne-Montrachet. They have significant Village and 1er Cru holdings in Santenay and Maranges totaling 49 certified organic acres, and have been around since 1830. Paul Chevrot created the current incarnation of the domaine in 1936, and it’s now run by his grandchildren -  brothers Pablo and Vincent Chevrot. While little known in the US, their wines are a huge hit in France and most of western Europe, and have a big following in Japan as well.

I was first turned on to Chevrot when I ordered a glass of their Crémant Rosé at La Dilettante, my favorite wine-bar in Beaune. Proprietor Lolo Breslin has a great palate and a nose for truly special stuff - when I see something new on his list, I order it. (It was at Lolo’s I was first turned on to Julien Sunier’s great wines.)

I was floored by the Crémant, and set off to find these guys and see what the domaine was all about. Turns out the Chevrots had both previously done internships at J-J Confuron, so I knew they had to be great people. The Chevrots make some 15 different wines, an impressive array of reds and whites as well as some mind-blowing sparklers. The wines are beautifully crafted throughout the range, and offer some of the best bang-for-rthe-buck in all of Burgundy. You read it here first!
